Handling Holiday Stress

Santa isn't the only one coming to town. So is Holiday Stress Express! You know, those times when the party is at YOUR house and it's a mess. The kids are fighting, the dog puddled the carpet and the main course went up in flames. There is so much to do and all you really want to do is sit down and cry.

Take heart. I have some ideas for you to calm that savage beast.

Fighting kids? Send them to their rooms, even if they share a room. Let them handle their disagreement themselves.

Next, so the house is messy. My mom always used to tell me "When you have kids, you've got nothing but kids." So clean the rooms that folks will see and forget the rest. If it isn't perfect, no one will really care. Most people are comfortable in a lived in cluttered look. (If they don't like that cluttered look, that's ok. Please yourself, forget what anyone else thinks.)

So the 'juvenile delinquent' peed on the carpet? I have one of those too. A good absorbent towel, a little vinegar and it all goes away. No muss, no fuss, no smell. (Never use carpet cleaners on those types of spots. Use a tiny bit of laundry detergent - one without bleach! Laundry detergent is designed to rinse out. Carpet cleaners leave soap in the carpet and actually make it dirtier. (This from my friend the carpet cleaning expert.)

Now, to the really important stuff. The dinner is up in flame. OK. Be creative. You'd planned on a standing rib roast. But it looks like that isn't gonna happen. What else can you do? Toss out the high flying, gourmet ideas and settle for the simple. Got the makings for a casserole? People aren't coming because they want your food. They are coming because they like your company. Again, if they aren't comfortable with anything less than perfect, are they really the type of folks you want to associate with anyway?

Ok. So, what is the plan?? Take a deep breath. Give yourself PERMISSION to be less than perfect. This is the most important and most empowering statement you can make to yourself at any time. I give myself permission to _____________________. You fill in the blank. To be less than perfect. To enjoy myself in spite of everything that's gone wrong. To be confident in my abilities.

Try this one, too. I am calm and confident. Nothing rattles my composure.

The holidays are a time of great self imposed stress. Why are we doing this? Because we think we have to be perfect. We think we have to please everyone. We think what others think is important. AND none of this is true. Others aren't giving you much thought at all, they are too busy worrying about others think of them.

This is all geared toward holiday stress. But it is all true for any time of year. Relax. Take a deep breath. Give yourself permission. Do what you can and forget the rest. Those who truly love and respect you won't care one whit.
